Plant pots: why are they a must for your garden?

Plant pots allow you to grow flowers, plants and groceries when you don't have enough soil in your garden to grow them freely. Therefore, they are quite useful if you only have limited outdoor space or no soil at all on the ground, typically in a patio or a balcony. Plant pots must be large enough to allow the complete development of the plant's roots and, unlike small plant pots, planters also allows you to grow plants of a certain size, such as shrubs, hedges and fruit trees.

Usually, balcony planters have a drainage hole at the bottom to prevent stagnation, which damages the roots and causes them to rot. In this case, a plate is placed underneath to prevent water leakage and to wet the floor. Compared to the solution of growing plants in the ground, plant pots allow you to choose where to place the plants and to move them quickly. Thanks to the use of materials with a strong decorative impact, such as wood or fibreglass, these essential garden accessories can also be an exciting furnishing accessory. You can use garden pots and planters to:

  • define driveways and paths

  • create a separate corner in your veranda, using them as a dividing structure

  • add a touch of class to your poolside

  • b decorate the barest areas of your garden or terrace

  • create a point on which to focus the attention of observers, especially in the case of models with a more accurate and attractive design

Which material to choose for your plant pot?

Plant pots differ first of all in terms of materials; from terracotta, one of the oldest materials, to PVC, wood, stone or cement. Each of these elements gives life to plant pots of different shapes and sizes, from small pots for succulent plants to larger ones for saplings and creepers. Plastic pots, or Pvc as the case may be, are characterised by their resistance to both weather and impact, but at the same time, they are very light and easily transportable. Both materials, on the other hand, can be painted or decorated in many colours, to adapt to the surrounding environment or become a style and an object of decoration themselves.

Terracotta is breathable, does not facilitate the accumulation of humidity and is therefore very suitable for plants that suffer particularly from this situation and for those who are afraid of exaggerating with watering. On the contrary, however, when terracotta pots are placed in very sunny positions, or during the summer, they dry very quickly and require at least two waterings a day to allow the plants they house to survive the heat.

Wooden boxes for plants

Wood is a natural, beautiful material, charming to look at and suitable to contain plants and flowers, as it allows air and heat to pass easily. Wooden plant pots are treated in such a way that they become resistant to humidity and weather, but this is also their main downside: they need maintenance, to avoid deterioration over time.

Don’t forget that that wood is the most suitable material for those willing to try their hand at making DIY plant pots. If you get the wood and a few tools, or if you use boxes such as those for fine wines, you can have fun making very personal and original plant pots. To make them last for a long time, however, it is necessary to treat them with the appropriate paints. Wooden plant pots are often used on terraces and balconies to grow vegetables and aromatic herbs.

Stone and concrete plant containers

Let’s have a look at the stone and concrete plant pots, as they are very suitable in certain situations. Generally speaking, heavy concrete plant pots, in classic or more particular shapes, are used to decorate entrances, avenues, busy spaces, or to accommodate small trees and creepers. This type of plant pot is rather heavy, suitable for plants that do not need to be moved frequently and for large spaces. Concrete garden planters can give more character to the corners of your garden, enriching them with alternative, but also decorative solutions.

They can be made of white, grey, marble or antiqued concrete and they are practically indestructible; we could say the same about stone pots, which are just as solid and durable. Very heavy and quite expensive, but also beautiful and decorative, these plant pots are heavy and difficult to move. An alternative is reconstructed stone vases, i.e. made of stone fragments mixed with cement. It is good to decide where to put them and not to think about moving them frequently.

Calculating the right size for your plant pot

If the plant pot is not big enough, it may deprive the roots of the right amount of soil, while when it is too large, it could promote the formation of moisture, ideal for the proliferation of mould and pests. Therefore, it’s important to choose the size of the plant pot carefully. The basic rule of thumb is that for the well-being of the plant, the roots and foliage should have enough space to develop and to avoid frequent repotting. For slow-growing plants such as cacti, the pot will remain the same for several years, but for fast-growing plants such as ficus, repotting is carried out in a container with a diameter 2 or 5 centimetres larger than the previous one. Avoid repotting plants housed in plastic pots in terracotta containers (or vice versa), because the development of the roots is different and the change of material puts their growth at risk.

  • a pot with a diameter of 16 centimetres is the appropriate container for a plant from 40 to 100 centimetres high, while a 26-centimetre diameter pot can host a plant with a height between 130 and 220 centimetres

  • for an azalea that is 35 centimetres high and approximately 40 centimetres wide, a plant pot with a diameter of 25 centimetres is more than ok. At the same time, a giant, drooping begonia is suitable needs a pot with a diameter above 30 centimetres and a height of at least 40 centimetres. For a ficus Benjamina more than 1 metre high, the diameter should be of at least 27 centimetres

  • for bonsai pots, the depth should be equal to the diameter of the trunk just above ground level. If the pot is round, the diameter should be one-third of the overall height of the tree

Round, square, rectangle plat pots: which shape is best?

When choosing the shape, take into account your personal taste, the location of the pot and the type of plant. You can opt for:

  • round pots: this is the most common shape for plant pots. Round pots - cone-shaped or cylindrical - are ideal for fruit trees and indoor plants as they favour a better distribution of roots

  • rctangular or square pots are suitable to optimize space, as they can be placed side by side. A low rectangular vase offers the right capacity for plants such as viburnum, abelia and oleander. In contrast, a high and narrow rectangular vase is more suitable for boxwood, periwinkle and astilbe. A tall rectangular vase can also accommodate a mix of plants and create a mini flower garden on your balcony. A square vase with a wide base is suitable to grow olive trees, ornamental pear trees and lemon trees.

  • corner plant pots, thanks to their 90-degree cut shape, allow you to place your greenery into spaces that would otherwise remain unused

  • tall column, square or round vases can enhance an entrance or an access staircase

  • hanging plant pots are very scenic with their cascade effect and can bring a touch of colour without occupying space on the floor
