RETROSPECTIVE 1978 MKII - Three-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair walnut/grey
Text für Setartikel..

SIMPLE ELEGANCE Uncompromisingly retro

The extraordinary speakers of the Retrospective series make a statement for uncompromising, authentic design made in Berlin. Inspired by the 70s aesthetics, classic and innovative details meet at the highest level and blend into a timeless whole.

With the Retrospective MKII, NUMAN's retro speaker series goes into its second round. The mechanical design has been technically optimized and the acoustics have been fine-tuned. The warm and dynamic sound has remained intact and the high-frequency portion has been refined with great care. Its new properties gives the speakers more detailed richness and transparency. Furthermore, customer-oriented personalization is still ensured. Three housing colors can be freely combined with the matching covers. Just choose what fits best for you.

IMPRESSIVE INNERWORKINGS Dynamic, self-assured and powerful

The equally subtle and simple retro look of the NUMAN Retrospective 1978 MKII makes design-lovers' hearts beat faster. The technology inside the speakers even convinces the audiophiles. The speakers of the Retrospective series are not completely neutral. Rather, their sound is warm, dynamic and shows itself as extremely playful in any musical context.

The technical focus is on the high-quality 3-way crossover, which splits the audio signal precisely and relays it to the 20 cm (8") woofer, 10 cm (4") midrange driver and the tweeter with a built-in NUMAN sound conduit.

The positioning of the loudspeakers using the included Retrospective stands is especially unique. The NUMAN Retrospective 1978 MKII rewards the free setup with a clean bass reproduction as well as a powerful, punctual and particularly lively sound.

The Retrospective 1978 MKII bookshelf speakers provide a space-encompassing and impressive listening experience that you will never forget.

THOUGHTFUL DESIGN  Indispensable sound optimizer

With the special Retrospective stands, the speakers look both visually and acoustically attractive. The convertible design makes it possible to set up the speakers according to circumstances and preferences and thus to optimize the resulting sound. Due to the inclined installation, reflections of the sound off of hard surfaces are reduced. Interference in the low frequency range is avoided and the frequency response is noticeably improved.

Made of vibration-absorbing acrylic and provided with corresponding recesses for the connections, the speaker stands offer an installation angle of 5 or 20 degrees. Thus the stand, in the spirit of the late seventies and early eighties, lets the speakers be tilted towards the sky when they are placed on the floor or find themselves gently inclined on tables, TV furniture or sideboards.

Schade

The boxes look very nice and were packaged very well. Unfortunately the sound check was a disappointment. Drone, sound tinny. The bass is simply too poorly tuned, although the mids and highs would be very balanced. A pity

I bought two pairs of these speakers because I really like a balanced surround sound with sound from every direction for music enjoyment. That's why 4 speakers of the same value were important to me, so I didn't want to fall back on typical film setups with two good front speakers and slimmed-down rear speakers (center neglected for a moment). I had already had very good experiences with it in the living room (Canton LE 107) and wanted to do something similar in the office. In contrast to the living room, however, I have clearly capped my budget. Apart from mostly listening to music, I would like to be able to use surround for computer games in the future. The positioning of the loudspeakers was a limitation, since there are cabinets or desks against the wall essentially everywhere, so that floor-standing loudspeakers were not the means of choice. I was optimistic that I wanted to use a 3-way box in order to spare myself a separate woofer if possible (more on that later). From the start, the loudspeakers should move to the wall in the upper corners. After some research and also according to the manufacturer's instructions, the boxes should be positioned about 50 cm away from the wall, which turned out to be unfeasible. So I was already prepared for sound reductions in the bass range (possible booming). The positioning was also determined from the outset, so that sound optimization through the best possible adjustment in the room (room modes, etc.) was not feasible, apart from the swivel options of the wall arm holder. The materials make a very good impression. All corners are rounded, the packaging was very loving and well thought out (separate gloves were included to avoid leaving any grease marks, etc.). It was fun unpacking the speakers - as it should be with a (own) gift. The cable connection was well suited due to the screw connections (4mm2 solid copper - should be unnecessary because they shouldn't have any audible influence, but the few euros more...) After the first start-up, the sound was rather disappointing. In the bass range, it first seemed to me as if the woofers were not in operation at all. The specified frequency response, which is specified between 50 and 20kHz at +-6dB, was already clearly noticeable here. Unfortunately, I could not find a measurement curve for this, so that the possible outliers were more likely to be suspected and then explored, since I also have no measurement equipment. Various tones are felt to be missing compared to my Canton floor-standing loudspeakers (20 years old). That was to be expected, of course, but I didn't expect it to be so obvious. The mids, on the other hand, were impressive from the start and are really fun. Guitars sound very powerful and vocals also come across very strongly. For my taste, the highs come from the factory rather low, especially at around 7.5kHz there is a lack of clarity here. If these are connected to a PC, as is the case with me, you can use the equalizer in the program (AIMP) to compensate for this. Playback via other sources makes this a bit more difficult, since unfortunately no calibration is possible on my receiver (Yamaha RX-V450) and only treble/bass can be adjusted via the obligatory controller. Therefore, I can only recommend operating the speakers on a newer receiver that supports a corresponding device for calibration (e.g. my RX-V650 in the living room, even better a completely new one with an app + measurement curve). Nevertheless, it was possible to get a grip on it with other settings (cross-over frequency to cut off the low frequencies that are not possible anyway, around 100Hz proved to be good, but at least 60). In the case of the highs, the increase on the controller was completely sufficient. Thus, the loudspeakers also show satisfactory results in this area (at slightly higher demands, good enough for normal listeners anyway). After adjusting the cross-over frequency and the associated increase in bass (in the range that can be represented) and additional approximate adjustment of the separate loudspeaker volume and distances, a very nice sound could be produced. Since the front speakers on the wall in the corner tended to boom, I initially worked with appropriate damping in the rear opening. But then I gave up on that because of the setting options on the receiver. Now nothing is booming, despite an increase of 4 dB (highs are at 6 dB). Especially the rear speakers, which were decoupled from the cabinet with some packaging material (white foam), produce a much softer bass in the front seating area than the front speakers in the corner could. Since I couldn't afford the distance to the wall here either (only 8 cm), there could probably be more here. But now to the actual sound. After the somewhat longer optimization phase, the speakers have a pleasant bass, which cannot keep up with a woofer for a long time, but sounds balanced and appropriate. In some songs, especially with falling notes, something is missing. Therefore, I can only recommend adding an appropriate woofer. The mids were really great anyway. The highs were more manageable and also show a predominantly clear picture here, although a clear difference can be heard here compared to the Cantons in the living room. There is a very harmonious sound in the room, which is not only focused in one position, but is also correct when walking around. My goal was also achieved of not only hearing the sound from one direction from the front (6CH stereo program on the amplifier). It must be said very clearly that these are not incredibly overwhelming loudspeakers in terms of sound. For the sake of fairness, however, it must also be mentioned that the price segment for a 3-way box with such a great look can no longer give it away. For the price it's just hard to get more. Therefore, I have to give the boxes a very good rating, even if there will certainly be significantly better boxes in a higher (middle) price segment. Visually, however, they are really great. In retrospect, you might be better off using a classic setup with 2-way speakers and woofer(s) if you wanted to buy a woofer anyway. I can't make the comparison though, so it's just speculation. I do not regret the purchase. Whether I would buy it again depends on whether a 2-way setup could convince me. Therefore, a clear purchase recommendation if you do not want to spend more. Nevertheless, I can only recommend an additional woofer, because I simply miss some tones. PS.: Even if it may come across as such, they have a perfectly adequate sound in the bass range. In my opinion, it's just not deep enough here - and if you want to feel the tremor at a louder volume, that's just not possible.

First of all...these are large and relatively heavy compact loudspeakers. So all those looking for bookshelf speakers...forget it. I think they belong relatively free-standing on stands. I angled them slightly. Then they unfold their full potential. Connected to an old Denon DRA 735 with 2 × 135 watts sinus and as a player an old Philips CD player a dream. I had many two-way speakers before...no comparison. Finally reasonable mids. I stuffed socks into the bass reflex tubes, I like them better. But it's a matter of taste. If you like more bass, leave the bass reflex tubes open. A strong amplifier with at least 2×100 watts sinus should already be available. Then the Numan will also be properly fired. I'll spare myself sound descriptions. You have to hear them yourself in the room, every room is different. I am very satisfied and can only recommend them.

I've been looking for a compact 3-way box to replace my Magnat Monitor Supreme 200 (2-way) for a long time and came across the Numan boxes. I immediately liked the retro design and ordered it in walnut/grey front. The boxes arrived very well packaged and are an absolute feast for the eyes. The processing is really flawless. Connected to a Pioneer A-20 integrated amplifier with 2x50 watts and in combination with a pair of Universum 3-way speakers from 1980 (!), which are twice as large, I have now found a combination that complements each other perfectly. With the Magnat 2-way speakers, I missed the presence of the medium-high tones; now the music is more in the room and the instruments are easier to locate. The relatively weak bass foundation mentioned by some forists, I would describe as sufficient according to the size of the speakers, here you can adjust the amplifier a little depending on your taste. If the boxes are set up close to a wall, this point is no longer important. Unfortunately, the speakers are not a bargain, but I have not regretted the purchase for a second.

The boxes arrived very well packaged and the goods were in excellent condition. Since the package came with dpd, I was also able to determine the drop-off location. In times of Corona you are always a little more careful. The sound is very good, well I'm an absolute layman, so I can only judge it by how I hear the music. But I connected the boxes via banana plugs and also took a decent cable. I set them up in a 30 m² room (home office). I think in a large living room I would take slightly larger floorstanding speakers. I will now buy a subwoofer to give the bass even more pressure. For the price, you can't go too far wrong either.

Echt gut.

Not my first pair of these speakers. I wanted 3-way loudspeakers, because the boxes of this size, which are usually only offered as a 2-way system, always lacked a bit of "size". Sometimes too little bass in favor of the mids or too few trebles or just the missing mids. That should end with a 3-way system. But I didn't want to pay thousands. Since I couldn't listen to the boxes before buying it was a lottery game. But: I won. The sound is really good. From rock to classic. I've heard much more expensive speakers that deliver significantly less sound quality. An unbeatable price/performance ratio, decent workmanship and a really great design. Like back then, in the 70s, when good music was still being made. PS they don't really fit on the shelf. So I got the small sloping plastic stands from Numan. Really good.

I got the extra stands for the floor and they’re a great match. These should be able to fill a room of up to 50-75 m2 but they bring nice and warm sound in my small study.

If you are looking for inexpensive, decent speakers, you will certainly be satisfied with the NUMAN Retrospective. Of course we're not talking about high-end here, but the sound is convincing. If you operate the 3-way speakers on a decent stereo system, you don't necessarily need a subwoofer. The basses can definitely be described as powerful, even if not like from modern subwoofers. The design and workmanship are okay for this price, but the speaker covers look a bit unclean in detail. The NUMAN sign, which serves as a handle when the covers are removed, is somewhat poorly attached. The boxes play quite clean for this price. Clear highs with some details, a slightly lowered midrange and decent bass. For the price, I've never heard (or seen) anything better. Even a decent stiffening on the inside and the spatial separation of the high-midrange segment from the bass segment are not a matter of course, and in combination with the acoustic insulation mats used, not the rule even in significantly more expensive systems. Since the components are certainly produced in the Far East, a good price is possible, one that, on closer inspection, should make even the top dogs from Germany break out in a cold sweat. For loudspeakers from well-known houses, they are certainly worth twice the price with comparable performance. My RESPECT for the performance goes to Berlin...

Doch was bedeutet das eigentlich.

The boxes were delivered by DPD. Packed securely (outer carton, inner carton, cloth bag). The front panels are supplied in a separate package. The processing quality is impeccable (no quirks, uncleanly glued film, etc.). The back, which is neglected in many boxes, is also top-quality. That was a surprise for me given the very low price. Screw terminals make a good impression. Unfortunately, there are hardly any videos on the net for exactly this type of speaker. That's why I describe the boxes a little more extensively. I'll start with the intended use first. The speakers are connected to a JBL 2-way center on an older Kenwood AV receiver with a rated power of 5x100 watts. Because of the bass reflex tube on the back, the speakers are 45 cm away from the rear wall. They are on a TV shelf. So basically a 3.0 system, although I had actually planned to connect an active subwoofer and use a 3.1 system. The AV receiver receives the sound via Toslink cable (optical) from the Panasonic TV. The boxes are therefore primarily intended for use on the TV (mainly satellite receivers, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video). Now for the sound. In other reviews, Numan often speaks of a "warm sound". I can confirm this with these boxes. But what does that actually mean? There are no overemphasized brilliant highs, which sometimes make voices sound sharp with S-sounds, especially when used on TV. Nevertheless, voices are very clearly understandable (even in pure stereo mode without a centre). In my opinion, effects are reproduced precisely at both low and high volumes. The bass is so good for me that I no longer need a subwoofer. At medium volume and sitting distance of approx. 4.5 meters, extreme deep bass effects can be felt in films (e.g. Attraction) on the couch. The bass isn't overly crisp, but it's more than powerful enough for me. I can't say whether the speakers are suitable for permanent techno bass orgies. I'm not an extreme bass lover, but there are certainly other boxes for that. When playing music, vocals are reproduced clearly and with many details. Whether you like the sound depends on personal taste and the style of music. I think the boxes are great for rock (also hard rock) and pop. I also briefly tested the classical music, but I had the impression that it very much depends on how the instruments are put together as to whether I like the sound. The boxes have a wide beam angle. So you don't have to sit right in front of it or in the optimal stereo triangle. Certainly there are good and better speakers from Numan and of course from other manufacturers. For a pair price around 200€ but rather few. The covers could be a bit cheaper though. The retro design immediately appealed to me. The sound also reminds me of the "good old Japanese hi-fi loudspeakers from the 80s". I am extremely satisfied with the purchase decision. But with speakers it's like with cars - what one likes, the other can't stand.

After a somewhat long delivery time, the two MKIIs were with me. Very well packaged, the boxes immediately surprise with good workmanship and attention to detail. The beautiful LS chassis are precisely fitted and screwed. All-round successful design including solid screw terminals at the rear. Silicone feet fitted and set up. Player is from 1995 Sony integrated amplifier & CD player with 2x50 watts. Electronic music a'la Jarre or Schiller is tonally very pleasant with deep, soft basses. Dire Straits guitars very differentiated and clear. Madonna's CD "Ray of LIght" produced a super sound image. I had never heard the CD sound so powerful. Electronic dance sound at its finest. For me, the boxes are relatively close to the wall. But that's intentional, because I listen to bass-heavy music. My partner was also very impressed and convinced of the good sound, so that now her 25-year-old Sony speakers have to give way. I've had quite a few speakers in my life. Whether standing LS or small, home cinema (came away again). But the music quality offered here for the price is remarkable. And also pleasing to the eye. I didn't think it was possible. In any case, I give it 5 stars for sound quality, workmanship and design. Always seen in relation to the price. It doesn't get any better than that.

Now that the speakers have been played in, I am very satisfied. They do exactly what I was looking for. A compact 3-way box that offers a great sound at a good price/performance ratio. Highs and mids are displayed cleanly. Lows could be a touch crisper, but that won't get much better given the size.

We were looking for boxes for stereo operation in a relatively small room (15 square meters), but they also have a certain quality requirement. We are relatively spoiled with our T+A system with Visaton boxes. We attached the Numan boxes to our Pioneer 924... and were very positively surprised. Clear tones, great localization of voices and instruments, bass of course doesn't reach into the "belly", but it's okay because we operate this system in an apartment building... Important: Don't skimp on the speaker cable. At first only had one with a 2mm cross-section on hand, then exchanged it for a 4mm at the weekend. The bass and the spatiality have increased significantly.

This review is for both the 1977 and 1978 speakers. I've been looking for a replacement for my Infinity floorstander, Bose rear speaker, and separate center combo for a long time. The desire was something noble, matching the design of the living room, as well as an affordable alternative to Bose, Teufel, etc. In other words, affordable but with top sound in stereo and 5.1 home cinema. I spent a long time researching online and in various specialist shops. I stumbled across these speakers by accident and a few positive comments that made me order them as well. They were delivered after 4 days. I've been able to use, listen to and enjoy it for almost 1 1/2 months now. I operate it together with the Jamaha RX-V577 receiver, which provides enough power per channel. During this time I fed it with everything possible.....CDs in the rock, classic, POP, Internet radio, LP categories s as well as various Blurays. At first I thought about getting a separate subwoofer because I was a bit disappointed with the bass, but I changed my mind. With the right material, it hums properly in the living room without being disturbing. Regarding the sound: whether in stereo mode for music or in surround mode for files, I'm thrilled. The highs are just as harmonious as the basses. Subtleties of a piano sonata, powerful bass in a rock concert? Everything is right with these boxes. I run them without the retro covers and can only give a 100% purchase recommendation here. At the moment I'm hoping that a suitable center will be developed by the same company, because the design and the workmanship as well as the sound quality are just great. You would often have to pay a lot more money to achieve this with branded boxes.

MfG

These speakers meet my expectations 100%. I previously had 2 large floorstanding speakers from a no-name brand. These had decent bass, but otherwise they weren't worth much. As a specification for my new loudspeakers, a few points were clear: - should have space in the new living room - should cover a wide spectrum - should fit my low-board in terms of design and size: Most speakers are relatively similar in design and also in color plain/black. That's why the Numan Retrospective 1978 particularly appealed to me! On the one hand, they match my lowboard perfectly in terms of design and color scheme. On the other hand, they were also able to convince me acoustically. Due to the 3-way construction, they have finely differentiated highs and mids. Of course, the bass couldn't keep up with the old floor-standing speakers, but the bass is 100% sufficient for stereo playback. They also set up a very nice stage. Since I also use the speakers in a surround system, I was able to confirm the good sound there as well. The effects they depict come across very well and in a differentiated manner. Additional speakers are the NUMAN Octavox 702 - 2-way shelf speaker hi-fi home cinema speaker pair (200 watts, deep, powerful bass and outstanding dynamics, designed and developed in Berlin) black and the NUMAN Octavox 703 - 2-way center speaker home cinema hi-fi speaker speaker box (150 watts , deep, powerful bass and outstanding dynamics, designed and developed in Berlin) knows how to use it. I am very satisfied with the whole system. The fact that the loudspeakers come from Berlin was also a factor that had a positive influence on me. Kind regards
