Infrared heaters: enjoying your open spaces during winter is possible

Outdoor stoves represent an interesting and efficient solution for localized, occasional or continuous heating for the outdoor environment. Making your terrace or garden cosy is the prerogative of those who have equipped outdoor areas with some kind of heating system, to make them usable even when the season does not guarantee pleasant temperatures. When winter is approaching, it is possible to think about resorting to effective and aesthetically valid solutions to ensure the usability of outdoor spaces. Often, the terrace or the garden is a natural extension of the interior spaces, and it is for this reason, using bigger or smaller external infrared heating systems guarantees a use, in complete safety, and the maintenance of the desired comfort.

Infrared heating is a valid alternative to traditional outdoor stoves such as mushroom gas patio heaters or fan heaters. Indeed, when we talk about semi-open terraces or gardens, the only way to ensure adequate, targeted heating is to install an infrared heater. The advantage of an infrared stove is that it can be installed in complete safety in the garden or terrace, without being damaged by wind and bad weather. For easy and safe operation, many electric stove models feature a remote control with which you can switch the infrared lights on and off at the touch of a button.

What to consider before buying an infrared heater for your garden

Although pleasing aesthetics are a desirable feature when choosing the ideal infrared heater for your garden terrace or patio, there are equally important aspects that you need to take into account to make the best purchase decision. What do you need to use the infrared heater for? Domestic or commercial use? How ample is the space to heat? What is your budget? Do you have special design requirements? The answers will tell you the type, power, aesthetics and price of the ideal infrared heater for you. A good infrared heater will have a minimum power of 1500 W and a maximum of 2500 W or more. Another technical characteristic concerns the radiating capacity of the heater. So how many square meters covered by the heat emission. Here too, it depends on requirement Here are some factors you should carefully consider, to make the best purchase:

  • The area you need to heat: according to the space needs, consider the area or range that your infrared heater should cover. Keep an eye on this section so that you can keep your family members or guests happy with a comfortable atmosphere and a pleasant temperature.

  • Technical aspects: the operating power, energy efficiency, its manufacturing materials and on the other hand, the safety systems it features, for example, the presence of an anti-tilt or anti-tip system.

  • IP protection: the IP class represents the degree of waterproofness of the infrared heater. This is a crucial aspect when you plan to use the infrared heater in an area which is exposed to rain or humidity.

  • Handling: depending on the type of infrared heater you choose, pay attention to handling and installation so as not to break your head without knowing how to start using it.

  • On a restaurant terrace, you will probably have to install a small heater for each table. At the same time, in a private veranda, a larger radius and casting solution will be adopted with a centralized installation. This is very relative for both domestic and commercial use

  • Maintenance costs: each particular heater has its maintenance costs that you should take into account, since in a certain amount of time you may have to take it to the technical service for a thermostat adjustment or some graduation.

Differences between conventional and infrared heaters

Traditional heating systems (electric, gas, heat pumps) heat the air using the principle of heat transfer by convection. Convection works by heating the air, which will then warm people in the surrounding space. This process causes large differences in the temperature of the air, which when moved does not distribute the heat with the same intensity throughout the space: on the floor, it is colder, and near the ceiling, it is warmer. This causes a lot of energy to be wasted. Also, hot air is easily lost through open doors and windows, making it necessary to heat more air to keep the temperature constant; this is a very inefficient and also expensive concept, which also requires a long time to feel the heat. Additionally, the heated air dries out, which makes dust particles move more freely in the room, increasing exposure to it, which can be very problematic for older people, or those with allergy problems.

Infrared heaters, on the other hand, do not heat the air but the walls and all the elements and people in the surrounding space. The radiation absorbed by the walls and furniture will be transmitted again, giving a pleasant feeling of warmth, which is distributed equally. This is a completely natural process; it works like a ceramic heater or the sun, which heat the bodies and the floor in sunbathing. Heatwaves do not have a significant effect on the movement of the air, which ensures constant humidity, so the air remains cool and dust-free. Also, the thermal feeling in a room using infrared heaters is higher by 2-3°C, compared to a conventional heating system, which allows for a reduction of the temperature in the room and thus reduces heating costs.

With conventional heating, people stay cold longer while the heater struggles to heat all the air in the room, consuming time and money. Besides, the air dries out, and the dust moves more easily around the room. People perceive all the heat through the electromagnetic waves of the infrared. The air remains at the same humidity, so dust is non-existent, and the atmosphere is pleasant. The time you need to heat people is just a few seconds.

Why is an infrared heater the best solution for your outdoor area?

In the following table we show you some of the main advantages offered by an infrared stove, comparing them with the characteristics of a heating device based on the convection principle.

Disadvantages of convection heating Advantages of infrared heating
High initial investment Instant heat in less than 1 second. 92% of absorbed energy is converted into heat
Low durability and high replacement cost Small size and easy installation
Additional electrical costs and other operational costs such as cleaning parts, etc. Low maintenance: compared to traditional gas stoves, an infrared heater does not require any specific intervention for periodic maintenance
Uneven temperature distribution, cold on the floor, hot on the ceiling The heater is protected against water and dust
High energy losses due to air losses (30-40%) and therefore higher costs Healthy heat, with a comfortable feeling of being in the sun
Unhealthy environment due to dust movement and dry air Does not remove the air: this is ideal for allergy sufferers, and it doesn’t generate fumes or harmful substances
Large energy losses because the heat is generated in an external room Direct heat that does not heat the air, with people and objects receiving all the heat. The heat that can be directed like light, and can be used where it is needed.
They often come with an unattractive design Ergonomic, aesthetic and functional design
