A good hi-fi system needs the right amplifier

The core element of all Hi-Fi systems is the stereo amplifier, whose task is to receive and process the signal coming from different sound sources, and to send it to the speakers. Hi-fi amplifiers are stereo, meaning that they the signal on two channels, the right and the left one. Some amplifiers can connect more than two speakers at the same time, for example, if you want to use two pairs of passive speakers with the same device. In our product gallery, you can find amplifiers that support up to four pairs of loudspeakers, ideal for amplification in different rooms simultaneously.

Some models provide a separate, non-amplified pre-amp output for the subwoofer , as these are usually active speakers with their own integrated amplifier.

Hi-fi amplifier: which class to choose?

Class A amplifiers have low distortion but are not recommended for high sensitivity speakers. Class B amplifiers are better for high sensitivity speakers but may, on the other hand, produce some distortion. Class A/B is a good compromise between the two categories, but the price is generally higher. Class D amplifiers are small, lightweight and efficient, and are currently very popular for their versatility.

The right amplifier for your hi-fi system: with or without an integrated DAC?

Some integrated amplifiers are built with an integrated digital to analogue DAC. If you like to listen to music from digital media such as a computer or network audio player for music streaming an amplifier with a built-in quality DAC will make a big difference. When you find an included DAC in an integrated amplifier, you can connect it to the source via TOSLINK and coaxial sockets, for significantly better sound performance than the classic RCA analogue connection.

Which loudspeakers to choose for your hi-fi system?

To find the right speakers for your Hi-Fi system, it’s important to know what technical specifications to look at and how to make the correct matching between the amplifier and passive speakers. If you are planning to purchase an amplifier for your Hi-Fi system, then you will need to purchase passive loudspeakers, while if you opt for a Hi-Fi system without an amplifier, you will need to use active loudspeakers.

Active loudspeakers - or amplified loudspeakers - include an internal amplifier, and need to be connected to the power socket. They can receive the audio signal directly from the source, no matter if it’s a CD player, an FM receiver, a DAB+ radio or an MP3 player. On the other hand, passive speakers do not have an internal amplifier, and you won’t have to plug them to the power socket.

This is an important point to clarify, and the choice in favour of one solution rather than the other will also depend, among other factors, on the availability of a power outlet near the area where you intend to place your speakers. In general, Hi-Fi systems consisting of an amplifier and passive speakers is the most recommended choice for those who want superior sound quality. Still, the right setting also requires a basic knowledge of acoustics. If this isn't your case, even a hi-fi system with active speakers will be able to give you an amazing sound, without adjusting the main audio parameters on the amplifier.

Shape and size

To choose the right speakers, the first thing to do is to measure the room. Manufacturers often quote the recommended distance from the wall among the technical specifications of the boxes. If the manufacturer recommends that the speakers are placed two metres from the wall, it is best to follow these recommendations.

Bookshelf speakers are good for a Hi-Fi system in a small to medium-sized room, such as a studio, bedroom or small living room. Most bookshelf boxes accept a wall placement (with the back of the box resting against the wall), but always be careful to check the specifications. Especially if a cabinet includes a rear bass reflex port, better not to place it too close to the wall. On the other hand, floor-standing speakers are the best solution for those who have a medium-large Hi-Fi room. They should almost always be positioned at a distance from the rear wall, and need more open spaces for best effectiveness.

How to match your amplifier with passive speakers?

Choosing the right speakers for your amplifier is quite simple. Among the technical specifications of the amplifier, check its RMS watts output, and then look for a pair of speakers that have a recommended power range around this value. If you read on the back of passive Hi-Fi speakers, for example, you will find the words "amplifier range 30W-120W. This means that the speakers can support an amplifier with power within this range. A 50W amplifier is, therefore, suitable for this type of speakers, because it will be neither too powerful nor too weak.

It is important to avoid buying an amplifier that is too powerful for your passive speakers, that could be damaged when receiving too many watts. At the same time, if the amplifier is too weak, it will be fatigued by loudspeakers that are too powerful.

As far as impedance is concerned, it is best to make sure that the speakers have a value equal or similar to that of the amplifier, which is usually in a range from 4 to 8 ohms. The most common passive speakers have an impedance of 6 or 8 ohms, and will work well with most amplifiers. If your old speakers are 4 ohms or 2 ohms, we recommend choosing a high-end amplifier that can handle lower impedances.
