Home cinema system: what is it and what to use it for?
The name "home theatre" clearly indicates what we are talking about: a series of devices to reproduce audio content with crystal-clear quality, while sitting comfortably on the sofa at home. Fisrt, there is not a single definition of what a home theatre system is, as these devices consist of separate instruments making up the entire system. It’s possible to purchase home cinema sound systems that come already packaged and include different components, but when we talk about the best home theatre, we are referring to a set of tools that are useful for achieving the purpose.
Exactly, the purpose. Why should we choose to buy the best home theatre systems? Even considering that the cost is not always low, why not settle for PC speakers, TV speakers or a pair of wireless headphones? The answer is easy: because we are talking about two very different things. All of them refer to audio reproduction, it's true, but the level of quality, fidelity, and ability to fully involve and excite only lies in the home theatre range.
Precisely, for this reason, it is necessary to take into consideration some technical aspects allowing to take advantage of an excellent audio output and enjoy a film, as well as other television programmes, in a different and more involving way from the classic one.
How does a home cinema system work?
Home theatre systems work straightforwardly: once connected to the smart TV or a blue ray player through the audio output cable, the different speakers receive input, via cable or using Bluetooth connectivity in case of wireless surround sound systems. To determine which speakers should produce a particular sound, home cinema system rely on a console, whose task is to analyse, divide and distribute different soundtracks to specific speakers. The method of operation is, therefore, straightforward, and if installed correctly, you will be able to make the most of this instrument in any situation.
When reading home cinema systems datasheets, you will always find the number of speakers indicated, with digits such as 5.1, 7.1, 9.1: the first digit indicates the actual number of speakers, while the second digit indicates the presence of the subwoofer. Depending on the number of speakers, you will get a different sound effect (Dolby Surround, Dolby Digital, etc.). The number of these components does not only concern the power, but also the type of sound they reproduce. This is why they are placed both frontally and behind the viewer, to obtain the enveloping effect typical of cinemas. The speakers, moreover, can be floor-standing or shelf-standing and vary according to their size and positioning.
Some tips to find the best home cinema system for your needs
When talking about you future home cinema, considerin certain features is essential to make an intelligent purchase decision: the number of speakers, wattage and power, the choice of whether to manage the wires or not and the position of the system plays a crucial role in the choice. Read on to find out more.
2.1 or 5.1: which home theatre system is best for your needs?
The choice between 2.1 or 5.1 boxes is a dilemma that, often, can be quite confusing. Apart from price considerations, with 2.1 systems you will get a Dolby Surround effect, i.e. you will have a pleasant sound quality that tends to expand throughout the room: high and low tones will be delightful to hear and especially voices, as well as other sounds, will be entirely finished.
5.1 surround sound systems also offer Dolby Digital quality: the main difference regards the sound, which will be more engaging but, at the same time, less refined. Therefore, the choice must be based on the sound quality you want to achieve, considering the size of the room in which you want to install this system.
Wattage and power of your home cinema system
To calculate the optimal wattage and power output, you should have a look at RMS (Root Mean Square) and PMPO (Peak Momentary Power Output). The former indicates the power beyond which the sound will be distorted. The second type of wattage, on the other hand, indicates the maximum limit tolerated by the speaker: this means that once that threshold is exceeded, there is a risk of damaging the speaker.
Therefore it is necessary to carefully evaluate these two data: a good home cinema system should have a wattage of at least 600 W, so that you can fully enjoy your home theatre without the risk of damaging it.
Wired or Wireless surround sound system?
The presence of cables is not just a matter of aesthetics. It is certainly an element to be taken into consideration; wires can twist, and you can never get to grips with them, but cables, unlike wireless connections, guarantee higher quality and stability. At the expense, it must be said, of comfort. Wireless devices are more practical; thanks to the absence of cables, it is possible to position the different speakers in the best possible way, even in the back of the room or on the sides. You will be able to use the entire perimeter of the room where you use your home theatre system, and the absence of cables will also eliminate that feeling of disorder and the implementation of interventions to conceal the cables.
If the room where you want to set up your home cinema does not have excessive dimensions, you can opt for cabled home theatres with no problem. When choosing the vest solution, also consider that you’ll have to plug every speaker making up a wireless surround sound system into an electrical socket; if there are few in the room, a traditional home cinema system with cables becomes an almost obligatory choice.
Where to place the elements of your home cinema system?
In terms of positioning, consider the number of speakers and satellites; usually, the larger speaker - the subwoofer, but also the soundbar -, is placed frontally, under the TV. Two speakers are positioned at the sides of the screen and the others, always balanced, behind the viewer. The rear speakers are placed parallel to the front speakers, thus creating a perimeter within which to sit and be embraced by sound and an immersive sensory experience.
